School Clinics Seek New Funding

School-based health clinics at Orr and Crane High Schools recently lost successful pregnancy reduction programs when health educator positions were lost in the face of decreased state funding. Other school clinics in Chicago are scrambling to meet new requirements for federal funding.

Because they emphasize education and prevention, many clinic services aren’t covered by basic health programs, said Karen Berg of the Illinois Coalition for School Health Clinics.

The coalition is supporting a proposal in Washington for a $6 million emergency apprpriation for clinics that have been cut out of the existing federal funding program.
