Rally at Juvenile Detention Center

A coalition of youth groups will rally outside the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center tomorrow demanding a quarterly visit by human rights monitors be scheduled now, in the wake of reports of an outbreak of “severe and widespread violence.”

They want to check that injured youth are receiving proper health care and ascertain what happened in recent incidents.

The groups, including Generation Y and Fearless Leading by the Youth, were granted quarterly walkthroughs as human rights monitors by the court-appointed temporary administrator of the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, said Eliza Solowiej, director of organizing at Southwest Youth Collaborative.  The agreement followed protests by the groups over health, sanitary and treatment issues in the facility.

The rally takes place at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28 at the detention center at 1100 S. Hamilton.
