Three fourths of Chicago youth jobless

Fully three fourths of Chicago  youth 16 to 19 — and a stunning 85 percent of the city’s African-American youth — will be unemployed this summer, according to a study released yesterday by the Alternative Schools Network and other youth advocacy groups.

Youth employment is crucial to reducing violence as well as dropout and pregnancy rates, according to the study.

“For less than what we spend for a week in Iraq, we could boost our economy and invest in our country’s future by putting 2 million jobless youth to work this summer,” said U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky in a statement, referring to House legislation that would boost funding for summer youth jobs.
