Teamsters Local 743 members have voted by a 3-to-1 margin to accept a contract proposal from SK Hand Tools that restores employees’ health insurance, the union announced this morning.
They had been on strike for over nine weeks. They went out after the company unilaterally withdrew health coverage without notice in the midst of contract negotiations.
The union members are now the only employees at SK Hand Tools who have health insurance, according to the union.
Health insurance “is something all Americans should have,” said strike leader Emilo Lunar.
Local 743 President Richard Berg gave credit for the victory to the persistence of SK workers, along with support from elected officials and informational picketing at stores where SK tools are sold.
Maybe what’s needed next is a picket line around the U.S. Capitol.
