What parents prefer in a school where 90% of children are meeting expectations is very different from a school in which children can’t read or where scores are significantly deficient. There are fundamental things that CPS needs to address systemwide — like lunch and recess to ensure that kids have time to eat and time to play so that they can focus in class. For schools that are deficient, CPS and teachers should be able to have a larger say in how the time and money is spent for remedial instruction, which could include innovative approaches through non-core classes in art and music. The question is how much leeway does CPS grant the better performing schools that already have decent reading and math programs. The answers are not simple and any position is going to have supporters and detractors.
