Workshops for 2009

The Power of Radio

Citizens, journalists, non-profit communicators and community leaders are invited to discuss the future of news, public affairs and talk radio.

Coming to contribute, listen and learn will be:

Wes Bleed, News Director, WGN Radio 720
Torey Malatia, President and General Manager, Chicago Public Radio
Art Porter, Executive Producer, Crazy Howard McGee morning show, WGCI
Javier Salas, La Tremenda 1200 AM
This year saw radio journalists mobilize more than 1 million immigrant-rights advocates across the country, providing forums where everyone from neighborhood folks to former President Bill Clinton can debate local and national issues, and serve as a lifeline in emergencies like Hurricane Katrina. Radio news and talk has shown it's more vital than ever.

Join Community Media Workshop's Thom Clark in this FREE roundtable discussion:
Thursday, June 8, 2006, 3 to 4 p.m.
Columbia College Chicago, 1104 S. Wabash, Chicago
We'll discuss such questions as:

• What has kept radio vital in this Internet era? How can it engage, inspire and inform?

• What role does feature reporting and public affairs programming play compared to headline news and shock talk broadcasts? How are stations competing for dollars and listeners' attention?

• How can disk jockeys continue to supplement community organizers' efforts by engaging the public in critical issues and inspiring regular folks to participate on civic action, like the human rights parades?

• How can non-profit communicators get their news and information on the air?
Let us know you are coming to this FREE event at radio@newstips.org.
