Cyclists to Crash Auto Show
Newstip Date: 02-09-2005
An ad hoc group of bicycle activists will again ride from Daley Plaza to the McCormick Place calling for a shutdown of the Chicago Auto Show (their bike ride starts at noon on Saturday, February 12).
Street theater will include a live performance of the Chicago Car Alarm Symphony and a levitation and exorcism of McCormick Place. "We'll try to convince people that our show is a better show to see than the auto show," said Dan Korn, spokesperson for the group.
According to Korn, cars are a health threat, killing 200 Chicagoans a year and injuring 15,000; they are the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. And auto emissions are a major factor in the city's high asthma rate.
The Auto Show "promotes auto dependence" while the automobile industry opposes increased spending on infrastructure for "safer, more efficient forms of transportation," Korn said.
The night before the Auto Show protest, the 8th annual Critical Mass Art Show will open at High School Gallery, 1542 N. Milwaukee (Friday, February 11 at 6 p.m.)
