Studs Terkel Awards 2005: May The Circle Be Unbroken
The atmosphere at this year's Studs Terkel Awards was as always, elegant and friendly. It was a celebration of what journalism at its best offers: better understanding of our neighbors, a look at what affects them and what we can do to make things better. For Studs, past Terkel winners, journalists, activists and friends of the Workshop, it was like a reunion. The food was great; the jazz superb. But, somehow it was more than all that. Words barely suffice. The air was charged. Maybe it was the sincere appreciation shown for the honorees' important work. Maybe it was the gratitude, humor, humility, and passion for people and journalism expressed in the speeches. Maybe it was the display of respect and affection for Studs. Maybe it was the power of Studs' hopeful spirit. Or, maybe it was finishing the ceremonies with Mary Schmich playing the piano and Eric Zorn leading us in song. Whatever it was, let's do it again next year -- Wednesday, April 5, 2006!
